The other day I was listening to a certain album and thought, "This is really good, more people should be listening to this". I started to think of the albums/bands I'd recommend the most. Then I started thinking of TV shows and movies, so then I decided to form lists.

These, for the most part, aren't my favorite things of these categories. In fact, I tried to keep them limited to things that I think most people would enjoy without knowing about already. The lists are in no order really except in the order I think of them.

Yes, I Like to Watch TV

As I sit here not studying for Footdick and instead watch "30 Rock" online, I suppose I should address the show as I did not with my other TV posts. I very much enjoy "30 Rock". Three months ago, I did not. I tried to watch some "30 Rock" in like season 2, and I was just not enjoying it. It was billed as the next "Arrested Development", which to me is like saying Fall Out Boy are the next Beatles. However, I can admit that I was wrong, and "30 Rock" is indeed, a good show. Rull funny.

I've been wrong about shows before. I HATED "Parks and Recreation" at first and it is now my favorite show "on" TV (BACK JANUARY 20!!!). Based off the commercials, I thought "My Name is Earl" was going to be horrible but I did very much enjoy it throughout its airing. I didn't watch "Chuck" at first because I thought it looked stupid, I was wrong there. Also the first promo for "Community" I saw was discouraging, but I'm glad I've watched that since the beginning. As of non-NBC shows, I wasn't a fan of "Cougar Town" until I watched it a bit more this season, much better than what I saw last year.

So even though I didn't do posts on all the shows I watch, nor did I talk about the shows no longer on like I planned, here is a list of shows that I suggest watching

Arrested Development

It's been a while since I did a post on my favorite TV shows (or any post for that matter), and I know I said I was going to do one for all of my favorite past and present shows, but that won't be happening. To resume I'm going to do a post about my favorite TV show of all time, "Arrested Development".


Now I wasn't sure if the readers of this (believe it or not, I have found out people do read this thing...) would be fans of the show already, or if they had never seen it and/or didn't love it. I wasn't sure if I should use a picture that captures the general nature of the show for the new fans, or do one that hardcore fans of the show appreciate. I decided to do one of each. First is a general picture from the first season. Later, will be a picture that out of context will make absolutely no sense what so ever. However, if you are a fan of AD, I hope the picture below will make you laugh as hard as I did just looking at it.

Now trust me, if this picture looks like something 100% abstract and absurd you're right. And yes, it is exactly what it looks like, a man and a puppet in a recording studio.

"Arrested Development" had "3" seasons. The first season has its moments of craziness, but overall is a pretty believable story. Season 2 starts the same but then switches to some more ridiculous plots. Season 3 is as unrelateable and absurd as possible....and that mix is what I love about the show. I love it when because it was relatable and I love it because it was so outrageous that there is no way it could ever happen. You need to give the show a try to appreciate that, and it is easy to get turned off. Here's all I ask; watch the first season as quickly as possible. One right after the other, but finish out the whole season. If you are liking what you saw, move on. If not, well it's certainly not for everyone but I still would suggest trying season 2 as well.

Brief Plot Synopsis: The opening credits say it all. "Now the story of a wealthy family that lost everything, and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together. It's Arrested Development".

Good Episode for Beginners: "Pilot", "Top Banana" (Season 1, Episodes 1 & 2)

Favorite Episode: If I had to pick one, "Let Them Eat Cake" (Season 1, Episode 22)

Fox cancelling "Arrested" has led me to boycott the network with the exception of Baseball and a few other things (Malcolm in the Middle" finale, NJ bank robber on "America's Most Wanted" come to mind). There really isn't much I can say to convince people to watch it besides just give it a try. Introducing it to at least 3 or 4 people has led them to LOVE the show as much as I do. And yes, if you don't "get it", you're simply not smart enough to "get it" (yeah, I said it). If you like the subtle humor in shows like "The Office" and "Scrubs", you'll love "Arrested Development".

Futurama

Forgot "Futurama" is back, just finished its return season.

Brief Plot Synopsis: 1999 pizza delivery boy is unfrozen after 1000 years.

Good Episode for Beginner: Really any episode is good, it doesn't take much to get used to it.

Favorite Episode: "The Farnsworth Parabox"

"Futurama" was great, FOX cancelled it, it got popular and now it's back on Comedy Central. This comeback season was kind of crappy, but I was happy to have it back.

Breaking Bad

Last of the current shows is by no coincidence the best show on TV right now (in my opinion), "Breaking Bad". It should be back in the Summer on Sunday night's on AMC.

Brief Ploy Synopsis: High school chemistry teacher is diagnosed with cancer and becomes a meth cook.

Good Episode for Beginner: "A No-Rough-Stuff-Type Deal" (Season 1, Episode 7)

Favorite Episode: "One Minute" (Season 3, Episode 7)

The first season of "Breaking Bad" was really good. The second season was excellent. Holy crap the third season was amazing. It tends to be a slow paced show so if you want to get into it but want to jump into it quicker, skip season one. I'm upset I have to wait for season four, but it'll give me time to get the DVDs and re-watch and enjoy. This also came at the suggestion of Alan Sepinwall.

Parks and Recreation

Getting into my two favorite shows on TV now starting with "Parks and Recreation". It is on Thursdays on NBC and will be back as soon as "Outsourced" is cancelled. "Parks and Rec" was the funniest show on TV last year. You should watch it.

Brief Plot Synopsis: Indiana city Deputy Parks Director and her over enthusiasm for her job where she works with the funniest co-works since "The Office".

Good Episode for Beginner: "Rock Show" (Season 1, Episode 6)

Favorite Episodes: Well I started to go over this with season 2 episodes...but couldn't get halfway through the list without laughing up. I guess "The Possum" or "Sweetums" would be my favorites. (This DVD needs to come out soon)

I watched the first episode of "Parks and Rec" in 2009 and HATED it. It is pretty bad. The first 5 episodes of season one all kind of suck. Then the finale wasn't bad, and 1/3 into season 2 it just took off. The thing with "Parks and Rec" is you need to give it a try. I didn't and I regret that. Stick with it, watch the second season and if you don't like that then don't watch it. But don't judge it based on season one like I did. "Parks and Rec" also has given us the greatest character on TV, Ron f'ing Swanson as well as the most haunting opening parody of all time (all below).

Psych

I've covered all the shows that are currently on the air so now I'll get into the "current" shows that are one some form of a hiatus. First up is "Psych" which usually airs on USA at 9 on Wednesdays

Brief Plot Synopsis: Guy convinces the Santa Barbra Police Department that he is a psychic but he is in fact just hyper perceptive. "The Mentalist" has the same plot 2 years later

Good Episodes for Beginner: "Pilot" (Season 1, Episode 1), "Shawn VS. The Red Phantom" (Season 1, Episode 8)

Favorite Episode: "Shawn (and Gus) of the Dead" (Season 2, Episode 16)

"Psych" ran out of good story ideas a couple years ago, but I still look forward to watching it every week. It still makes me laugh all the time, and the two leads, James Roday and Dule Hill, have just great chemistry as a crime fighting duo. I also created a drinking game for this show.

The Big Bang Theory

Thursdays are busy, especially with the moving of "The Big Bang Theory" to 8pm on CBS. So two days later here is what I have to say about the #1 comedy on TV.

Brief Plot Synopsis: Two nerdy scientists live across the hall from a hot girl.

Good Episode for Beginner: "The Luminous Fish Effect" (Season 1, Episode 4)

Favorite Episode: "The Creepy Candy Coating Corollary" (Season 3, Episode 5)

"The Big Bang Theory" is NOT the funniest show on TV, yet it is the #1 comedy ratings wise. It tends to get awkward, not sure if we should be laughing out or with the characters. Most viewers are stupid and enjoy both (there, I said it). At it's funniest, this show can have me on the floor laughing. Many times however, I just hear crickets. It is cheesy, but enjoyable none the less.

The Office

"The Office" started up season 7 last night at 9 on NBC.

Brief Plot Synopsis: Mocumentary about a Scranton, PA, based paper company and the characters who make it up.

Best Episode for Beginner: "Health Care" (Season 1, Episode 3)

Favorite Episode: "Conflict Resolution" (Season 2, Episode 21)

"The Office" used to be my one of my favorite shows. Then season 6 happened. It wasn't terrible, but it was just very disappointing. Michael Scott at a low key is very funny. When they go over the top he is just obnoxious and there was a lot of that in season 6. Last season aside, "The Office" has in the past been as good of a comedy as any on TV, and the older seasons will never disappoint me.

Community

Starting up at 8 is "Community", the best new show of last year in my mind. I begins its new season at 8 NBC.

Brief Plot Synopsis: Former lawyer must go back to a Community College in order to gain his legitimate undergraduate degree.

Best Episode of Beginners: "Spanish 101" (Season 1, Episode 2)

Favorite Episode: "Modern Warfare" (Season 1, Episode 23)

"Community" is ridiculous in every sense. But it is also one of the funniest shows on TV. It's broad with really only two characters playing straight, rateable ones. The pop culture references are priceless.

Modern Family

Premiering tonight is ABC's "Modern Family", the Emmy winner for Best Comedy. It starts tonight at 9pm.

Brief Plot Synopsis: Mocumentary that follows three related families: Gay Couple, Patriarch and his younger Latin wife and son, and traditional family of 5.

Favorite Episodes/Good Beginner Episodes (All Season One): "Pilot" (Episode 1), "Coal Digger" (E5), "Fizbo" (E9)

I was very pleased with "Modern Family" last year. Best Comedy? No, but one of the better ones. The Emmy's were deserving (Best Supporting Actor, Best Writing), and I'm happy it's done well. I wasn't sure of it, but the suggestion by yet again, Alan Sepinwall, paid off.

The Middle

First of the 2 Wednesday ABC shows I watch is "The Middle". It starts up again tomorrow night at 8:30.

Brief Plot Overview: Mother of a lower-middle class family deals with her life and family.

Favorite Episode/Good Beginner Episode: Block Party (Season 1, Episode 5)

"The Middle" is not an amazing show. I'm not pretending it is. But it is good. It is certainly funny. Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn (The Janitor) are great and all three children in the show provide a lot of laughs. I don't watch this show religiously, I don't mind when I miss episodes. But I do like watching it so if I have the time I do. I started watching this show at the suggestion of Alan Sepinwall, but he does not cover it extensively.

Mad Men

Nothing I'm watching tomorrow so I'll go with a show that aired last night, AMC's "Mad Men"

Brief Plot Synopsis: Follows the star of a 1960's ad agency with both his professional and personal life.

Good Episode for Beginners: "The Wheel" (Season 1, episode 13)

Favorite Episode: "Shut the Door. Have a Seat" (Season 3, episode 13)

Mad Men has won best drama each of its first 3 seasons. It is damn good all around. Probably the second best show on TV behind its AMC partner "Breaking Bad". It is not for people with short attention spans because that means you're too stupid to enjoy the show. I love the period setting of it which is very important to the plot.

How I Met Your Mother

Keeping up with my favorite TV shows. The season premier is Monday at 8 pm on CBS.

Brief Plot Synopsis: The title of the show is pretty much the plot. We follow Ted Mosby and his 4 best friends from 2005 on his search for his future wife (or at least mother of the kids he is talking to).

Episodes for Beginners: "The Slutty Pumpkin" (Season 1, episode 6), "The Pineapple Incident" (Season 1, episode 10)

Favorite Episode: "Slap Bet" (Season 2, episode 9)

I watched the first 4 seasons of HIMYM last summer to be caught up in time for season 5. Unfortunately, season 5 kind of sucked. Still, the creators have said that they know what went wrong and hope that this season is back to the old form. In it's best, HIMYM is one of the funniest shows on TV. As for the plot, I'm starting to get tired of it and want him to (SPOILER ALERT!!!!!) find the mother soon.

Favorite TV Shows: Chuck

After exhausting pretty much all possibly music posts I figure I'll go into one of my other favorite hobbies: TV shows. So in honor of the new TV season starting on Monday, why not talk about my favorite shows past and present. His old blog is linked on the side of my page, and from reading his material I now watch many new shows that I did not used to.

So to kick off this series I'll start with one of the shows that begin on Monday, NBC's "Chuck"

Brief Plot Summery: A electronic store computer expert (the Nerd Herd) receives and email that subliminally plants all the government's secrets in his head.

Recommended Episode for Beginner: "Chuck Verses the Intersect" (Season 1, episode 1)

Favorite Episode: "Chuck Verses the Ring" (Season 2, episode 22)

Chuck is an incredibly nerdy show. The plot is pretty absurd, but that's what makes it so enjoyable. It's about a nerdy guy who becomes a spy...and that's more or less it. Now despite the outrageous plots, the show is very funny and still there are many good emotional episodes. You can start watching whenever as long as you get a minor plot synopsis. Chuck certainly isn't for everyone and isn't the funniest show on TV, but it is all around fun and always a pleasure (no guilt). This is a show I started watching from reading Alan Sepinwall. Chuck airs at 8pm, Mondays on NBC

Favorite Fictional Bands

Now a little bit past the halfway point so I figured I'd give a little salute to my favorite fictional bands from various TV shows. They're in no order, but still all great to check out.

Duke Silver (Parks and Recreation)

Duke Silver is the stage name of Rob fucking Swanson. He was born ready.

Mouse Rat (Parks and Recreation)

Mouse Rat has gone over many changes over the years. The most obvious of these changes are the names. Other names have included Scarecrow Boat, Malice in Chains, Punch Face Champion, Flmaes for Flames, The Andy Andy Andys, Andy and the D-Bags, Crackfinger, Department of Homeland Obscurity, Fourskin, Puppy Pendulum, Possum Pendulum, Penis Pendulum, Radwagon, Jet Black Pope, Muscle Confusion, Just the Tip, Fiveskin, Threeskin, Angel Snack, Nothing Rhymes with Orange, Everything Rhymes with Orange, Nothing Rhymes with Blorange, Ninja Dick, God Hates Figs, Teddy Bear Suicide, and Radwagon. Without their front-man, Andy Dwyer, they are known as Rat Mouse and they are terrible.



Scrantonicity (The Office)

Scrantonicity (and Scrantonicity II) are a sting cover band who used to be a Steve Miller Band cover band known as "Jokers and Tokers"

Jeffster! (Chuck)

Jeffster! is probably my favorite band on here. Why? They're just awesome. They do covers of all kinds of songs, and have been known to play weddings and Comic-Con, as well as spoil government conspiracies.









Creation (Freaks and Geeks)

Playing different late 70's/Early 80's rock, Creation never really got anywhere. Their one booking for a house party was cancelled due to a car crash.


Dr. Funke's 100% Natural Good Times Family Band Solution (Arrested Development)

Dr. Funke's 100% Natural Good Times Family Band Solution used the power of folk music to tell about new "wellness supplements" and their side effects. They do not like they use of the wood block.


Motherboy (Arrested Development

Motherboy was a heavy metal band that rocked pretty hard in the 80's. they are not associated with the mother-son convention. I am legally obligated to make this distinction.


The Worthless Peons* (Scrubs)

The Worthless Peons have evolved much over the years. They have been known to a capella versions of cartoon theme songs, commercial jingles, sitcom theme songs, and others.



*The Blanks are a real band, but they appear in Scrubs as The Worthless Peons

Cool Cats (Scrubs)

The Cool Cats are an airband who fought the king but the king won. After admitting wrong doings they continued to rock on.

The Best Show You Didn't Watch

Though this post will be mostly about "Better Off Ted" (as pictured above), I do want to give "Scrubs (Med)" a mention as well. Last Tuesday was the final scheduled airing of both shows on ABC. Both were not expected to be back this year, but ABC chose to give them both 13 episodes and another shot, which was amazing for me. Unfortunately the shows continued to draw very low ratings, and not so amazing for me it seems that they are both done.

So first, "Scrubs" and its new format for season 9. The first couple of episodes weren't too great, featuring only a few funny moments. This did not last, as the most recent couple episodes have been, in my mind, very good. There are a couple reasons for why this happened. The first is that the show had a mostly new cast, and time was needed to introduce the new characters which took away from what the show could do.

This was met with the second thing that didn't work, and that was Zach Braff on the show as J.D.. He appeared in 6 episodes, and most of the ones he was in were the bad ones. This was largely due to the fact that they focused too much on him, and not enough of the new characters, who were the new stars. With that they also had him doing too much narration along with Lucy's narration. I think it would have worked if it was shifted either one way or the other, and I'd really prefer that Lucy had taken over.

But when those issues were not being presented, the show worked very well. Lucy wasn't the most enjoyable character in that I didn't care about her perspective as opposed to when the show first started and J.D.'s perspective is what made the show great. I guess this had a lot to do with not wanting to repeat the same things, but oh well. Drew was a great character who became much funnier as it went on. Dr. Cox wasn't as funny this time around, but still great as always. Turk was kind of annoying, but nice to have still. Denise was a nice choice to bring back from season 8, and provided a lot of great jokes.

Then there was Cole. Originally, I hated him. He was douchey, annoying, and a real turn off. Then....he grew on me. Suddenly his doucheyness wasn't a bad thing, but a great and hysterical thing. He quickly became the funniest thing on the show by far, and he is what I'll miss most afterwards.

A couple other quick thoughts:

• Nice to see plenty of Dr. Kelso, Elliot and The Todd
• Only one appearance by Jordan and The Janitor, but great none the less
• No Carla? I think Judy Reyes was pregnant so appearing on the show wasn't really too high on her to do list I imagine. Would have been nice to see her again though

Oh yeah...Better Off Ted

Well, this was one of the funniest shows in a long time, and if you didn't watch it you missed out. Pretty much it was "Andy Richter Controls the Universe" 2.0, and failed the same way. The show was outrageous in that it was clearly unbelievable, but that's what made it great.

Light sensors that can't see black people? Golden. Medieval fight club? Golden. Arguing over if you can harm a baby ("they're not indestructible")? Golden. Mordor the magician? Golden. An army general with a man crush? Golden. Putting children to work in the day care service? Golden.

I didn't even mention the pure genius that was Phil and Lem, the lab guys (pictured above long ago testing pepper spray). I'd watch them as a show (webisodes maybe?) any time, they did nothing but make me crack up. Some of the best things they created in the lab....

• Projected noise that can be targeted...and make people puke when used at full capacity (and not to be called "The Voice of God")
• Cleaning a coffee mug with hydrochloric acid (because soap leave a film)
• Buying a family of robots (but not the grandparents)
• Perfect bagels (that don't expand in your throat to kill the person eating them)
• An energy patch that looks exactly like a Band-Aid
• Throwing needles into the ceiling to see whose sticks the longest ("it's gotta stay in for at least a minutes, same rules as losing your virginity")
• A half organic computer that leaks acid-goo, or "ass-goo" for short, but can be fixed with an acid interface, or "ass-face" for short.

All in all, I hope they air the final two episodes at some point. The first season is on DVD, so when the second season comes out I'll get to see them then. The show was hilarious, and is online, so check it out. Even though it's too little, too late, it's worth enjoying while you can.

On a more important note...new Scrubs and BETTER OF TED TONIGHT

Scrubs [Med]

Scrubs returned tonight, and I'm not yet sure how I feel about it. I liked it for the most part, but I am without question biased. While the first two episodes were quite funny at times (whenever the Todd or Dr. Kelso spoke, for example), they seemed mostly uncomfortable. I'm giving them a pass, as the show does have the very difficult task of making the transition.

• I like Lucy so far, but I don't want a new hybrid of young JD and Elliot.
• Elliot is preggerz with JD's baby, all is good in my book.
• So the old hospital is gone and relocated to the med-school campus....I can buy that. Only thing that troubles me is that the med students seem too much like previous interns and residents. I thought I had a general understanding of the medical hierarchy after 8 years of Scrubs, but I guess not.
• Dr. Beardface and Snoop Dogg attending?!?! I think so. We're a Mickhead and Colonel Doctor away from the C-Team reunion
• I hope more of the B-Team is back besides The Todd (though he is my favorite). Specifically, Doug, Ted, and Jordan. I was never crazy about Lloyd (the delivery guy) because he replaced Doug in the Brain Trust

Like I said, looking forward to next week's episode (and the return of Better Off Ted!!!) as I hope it starts to come together more.
